Interesting piece but you could have added that a whole generation of high profile save the world journalists fell in line with Jain and sold their souls to the company store. it says little for us that our swash buckled and our got up and go got up and went with such ease. Dozens of journalists knelt at the altar of commercialism and agreed with desperate little nods towards the captains of industry who owned us that ploughing the fourth estate as bonded labourers was cool so long as we got the company car and a house rent. You also forgot to add that if Mr jain sneered at our profession and called it redundant we did very little to save our honour. You want to go singing to the bank you should have become an investment advisor. Somewhere I believe we are slipping on our Freudian banana skins. We want the TV and the car and let the devil take the byline, we will continue to play let's pretend.. .

I got a copy of crest in a sponsored program of TOI, it was Durban based Rajesh Gopie a fourth generation South African doing a hilarious Solo act depicting 25 odd characters " Out of Bounds " @ Sophiya Bhabha Hall.
I liked the concept of some well written " no limit on the number of words" issues it had presented.
However it is too early to predict the future of such an initiative so early. I believe TOI with its resources in marketing will be able to pull it off if not anybody.
Cheers

Yes, Crest has been a pleasant surprise indeed. But the way it has arrived, without any marketing fanfare, it could be just a decoy to counter HT on looks. It can also go the way of Metropolis (the last avatar of the Independent, Mumbai), if one looks at its backpages. And the style/substance issue is not over: the apparent edit page is delivering less substance than the regular ToI, though with more style. Since brand-wise and otherwise it is riding on the ToI, any good story idea may just go to Crest, at the cost of the main paper, which may go further into the infotainment mode. Let us wait and watch!
