@srikanth: thanx for the support sir.
however i wasn't trying to diss bikram at all.
in fact i am as mortified as him wrt the success of the 'fairness' market.
all i'm trying to do is to hold a mirror to ourselves.
the change, if we want one, needs to begin with us.
i am not condoning SRKs act.
all i'm saying is that we are imbuing him with quailities he obviously doesn't possess. he is neither a demi god whose word is gospel; nor is he a villain. like Bikram himself said, he's just an actor who's making a few quick bucks. it's just that one wishes we had more role models and not just models; people who are able to retain a certain personal integrity, even in a public role. but then that'd be asking for too much i guess. at the end of the day, we deserev the leaders we get...even if they be opinion leaders like srk.

I find Mr.Rajesh Ramaswamy's comments more practical than what you wrote Mr.Vohra. I sense your pain and also share it, but as Mr.Rajesh Ramaswamy's comments state, SRK doesn't have much to do with us Indian's wanting to be fair. It just is not 'fair' to blame SRK alone. SRK is just a actor, he says the given lines and acts as per the money paid to him - why should we expect SRK to be morally perfect in all he does on screen. Although mass media has huge impact on our morals and the way we decide between right and wrong, in this particular case, this prejudice has always been there.

We are attracted towards light. Light always symbolised knowledge and consciousness. While darkness is lack of knowledge at the least and is evil at the worst. This, we Indian's seemed to have understood and still do understand very well. But some how, down the ages, light became confused with 'white' and the more white one is, the more acceptable and attractive one became. One other thing that might have added to this attraction is that more Indian's have darker skin tones than whiter skin tones.

@Commander: I completely agree with Mr. Vohra. He says he does not believe that film stars have a moral obligation....the point that he is making is that just a few days ago SRK was saying that america is racist and now he is doing such an ad....that is hypocrisy...

Bikram, you make a point, but isn't racism built on economic disparity? In this case, Mr.Khan is taking advantage of his celebrity status to mislead the disadvantageous in believing the 'truth' of fairness from using a cream! That would be cause for a bigger 'criminal' condemation! Actors must behave both morally and ethically, because they have a fan following of the economically weaker section, who dote on all their 'filmy' acts. Shame on those who mislead the masses!!

Bikram Uncle - I used to come to your house as a kid when Priyanka and I studied together. I held a high regard of you then, and even more so now.

It's nice to hear someone with your experience and expertise speak out on a subject that is at its most basic level the most racial way to grow up in a society. The Indian society - especially those from India - have grown up to believe that being fairer is better; women were told if you are dark who will marry you - no wants wants a 'kali'; and now as the society is finally accepting a more cosmopolitan approach to life - let the fairness quotient also apply to the men. I personally find it a way of brainwashing people into believing that they 'need' products just to be able to be perceived 'better' than others.

As for moral standards, no actor / actress in Bollywood has those values - if they get paid a price they will do whatever it is they are asked to do .. and it's the society that spoils them. If we didn't agree to pay them huge sums of money, where would they be ? No where - they'd have nothing. Unfortunately in India - money talks - and that's what has come of our culture.

Mr Vora, putting aside the issue of Dark & fair Mr Shahrukh Khan is just an actor. Lets us not assign too much of Morality to him, he is available for whoever pays the top dollar or rupee and he is very clear in his mind about that . We are the ones who are getting emotional about these things.
I guess its going to take time to get over centuries of brain washing...but we are slowly and perceivably moving away from it...may be in about a couple of centuries we would figure out its just a lil pigment after all.

For years, SRK has sold himself and he has no qualms about doing it for reasons like buying a fancy house, good life for his kids etc etc. To expect sensibility from him is too big a expectation. Yeah, when the same man alleges bias by the US customs authority, his double standards are exposed...India mein sab kuch chalta hain Mr Vohra..

Absolutely right!! A person of his stature should not stoop down to this level to make money. And really, aren't Dish TV and his other gang of advertises not paying him well enough that he has to resort to this type of non-sense? Its a degrading product and a degrading ad as well.

Just don't expect anything sensible from SRK.... He should ask himself is he giving anything to society in return of their love towards him. Ektaa Kapoor is better than him..
